Opinion: Don't Mess with Our Kids!

It has been called the ‘death of women’s sports’, the Left’s attempt to force biological females to compete and against biological males in athletics.

During his flurry of Executive Orders (EO) on his first day in office, President Biden was sure to add an EO on preventing and combating discrimination based on gender identity or sexual orientation. By itself the order doesn’t change anything for publicly funded institutions, but it is a statement to set the tone for the cultural ambition of this Administration moving forward.

Obviously, this would require significant changes to the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights Title IX. During his Senate confirmation hearing, Department of Education Secretary nominee Miguel Cardona was pressed by Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) on the issue.

After multiple attempts to receive more than a cookie-cutter answer from the nominee, Sen. Paul frustratingly asked, “Do you think it is fair to have boys running in the girls track meet?”

Cardona’s response “I think it’s the legal responsibility of schools to provide opportunities for students to participate in these activities and that includes those that are transgender”. Later in the exchange, Sen. Paul explained that he believed most Americans don’t agree with allowing boys to compete against girls in athletic competitions, stating, “I think most people in the country find this bizarre and unfair, and you’re going to run the Department of Education? That concerns me.”

At the end of the day, this is far from a partisan issue. In recent polling from Politico and Morning Consult, the research found 75% of Republican voters disapprove of the idea. Most notably even Democratic voters were in an almost even (40% against 42% for) split about the issue of keeping transgender athletes out of women’s sports.

So, while it may seem as though this is an issue that Americans are going to ‘fall in (party) line’ on, it appears that a majority of parents and families across the country are beginning to speak up and stand against such harmful and radical ideals.

Within the last few weeks, it appears many conservatives have found their backbones and are ready to take on the culture war the Left has been brewing for years. Over twenty states are considering legislation to protect Title IX and girls’ sports. This week, Gov. Tate Reeves (R-MS) signed state legislation prohibiting biological males from competing in women’s sports, and Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD) has signaled her support for South Dakota's legislation.

The idea of embracing what once were considered ’wedge issues’; using cultural issues to win elections appears to be playing a major role in shaping the future of the Conservative movement.

Now this issue is front-and-center, a topic being discussed not just in state legislative buildings but at dinner tables, at soccer practice, and amongst families across the country. Politicians can choose to support some wildly extreme or progressive ideas that may frustrate or even upset conservative Americans. But the one thing that families can agree on; you don’t mess with our kids. Now is the time to press forward. Don’t stop having these conversations, continue contacting your congressional representatives, and most of all; keep fighting for our country and the principles she was founded upon.
